CHAPTER 14

Summary

Edna comes back to earth with a jolt when she arrives home to find that one of her children has refused to go to bed. She also learns that L'once has been anxious about her absence, but lost patience and has gone to his Club on business.

Ad'le, having taken on the responsibility for Edna’s children, leaves in order to be with her own children and her husband.

Robert helps Edna to put her son to bed, and the couple part after spending the whole day together.  Edna is upset that Robert has not stayed with her until L'once returns.

Interpretation

In this Chapter “Ah! Si tu savais” (If you knew) is the first line of a song that is sung by Robert on the boat and later by Edna.  This line to the song underlines the dramatic irony of the storyline.

If they had a crystal ball and could see into the future would it change their actions? Would Robert break with convention and elope with Edna?  Would Edna give up her friends and family, or stay and try and change those around her from within?
