CHAPTER 16

Summary

Some time later, L'once tells Edna that he saw Robert in New Orleans before leaving for Mexico. Upon hearing this, Edna wants to know every detail bout this meeting and asks many questions.

The summer is nearly over and one day Mlle. Reisz meets Edna on the beach. They begin to talk about the Lebron family and Edna finds out that the two brothers have a history of confrontation and that Victor is his mother's favorite. Mlle. Reisz gives Edna her address in New Orleans and urges her to visit when she returns.

Interpretation

Although the others in Edna’s immediate circle of friends, and her husband too, understand that she misses Robert, it is only Mlle. Reisz that recognizes Edna’s deeper feelings for the young Robert.  She senses that when the holiday is over and the party returns to New Orleans, Edna might need a sympathetic friend to confide in, so she gives Edna her address, urging her to visit.
