CHAPTER 20

Summary

Edna gets Mlle. Reisz’s new address from Mme. Lebrun.  She had tried to visit her and found that she had moved.

Whilst at Mme. Lebrun’s, Edna learns that Robert has sent two letters from Mexico.  Again Edna is disappointed that she has not received one. Victor, Robert’s younger brother, is there and he attempts to entertain Edna by recounting his escapades on the previous evening.  Armed with Mlle. Reisz’s new address, Edna leaves.

Mme. Lebrun and Victor comment on Edna’s new image, which is more expressive and appealing.

Interpretation

This is yet another incident where Edna is disappointed with Robert because he did not write to her from Mexico.

Victor and Mme. Lebrun notice Edna’s new appearance. She is much more expressive and is evolving into a more liberated state.
