CHAPTER 15

Summary

Edna finds out second-hand that Robert is leaving for Mexico and she is upset at the news. Robert had said nothing about this when they had been together. He hopes to make his fortune in Mexico.

She receives a message from Mme. Lebrun asking if Edna would like to visit her before Robert leaves. Edna responds that she is unwell. This prompts Ad'le to come and check on Edna. When the two women talk awhile, she iindicates that she is also surprised that Robert is leaving so suddenly.

Before he leaves, Robert meets Edna and advises her that he does not know how long he will be away. Edna asks him to write to her.

After he leaves, Edna becomes very depressed. She is annoyed with herself that she cannot get Robert out of her mind.

Interpretation

It is clear that the day Edna and Robert spent together has caused Robert to step back from the relationship. He can see that problems may arise if he sees out the summer vacation, and so he decides to bring forward his trip to Mexico. The fact that Edna is not advised of his departure directly from Robert hurts her. She has had to learn of his trip from others. This unforeseen occurrence has upset Edna's balance and she is disappointed in Robert that he does not have the courage to stay.

Robert has noticed that Edna's feelings for him could be dangerous. He is not prepared to face the consequences of this revelation.
