CHAPTER 27

Summary

After Edna has returned home from Mlle. Reisz’s house, Arobin calls on her and the pair becomes more intimate.  Arobin kisses Edna and she responds for the first time with passion.

Interpretation

At first this might seem curious behavior from Edna. Whilst proclaiming her love for Robert, she immediately becomes intimate with another man.

As part of Edna’s awakening, old passions are rekindled, but the aim for Edna is not to have a relationship with Robert or Arobin, but to release these physical desires. This is another step along Edna’s road.  She is being totally independent by using Arobin in order to obtain satisfaction. Although Arobin does not realize it at this stage, he is ironically being used by a woman, whereas in the past he has used so many women himself.
