CHAPTER 34
Summary
Edna
and Robert enjoy their dinner, but there is an atmosphere of awkwardness
between them. Their engagement is interrupted by Arobin who has
an invitation for Edna to attend a Card Party. Arobin strikes up
a conversation with Robert concerning the attributes of Mexican
women, but Robert is offhand and leaves. Edna asks Arobin
to leave also.
Edna
feels deflated concerning her meeting with Robert.
Interpretation
We have noted that Robert is ill at ease with Edna. He is suspicious
regarding her loyalty and wonders what her relationship with the notorious Arobin is like.
After all, Edna has been disloyal to her husband, why not to him? The atmosphere during their dinner is a far cry from the relaxed environment of Grand Isle.
